Rankings Methodology

How FilmSchools.app makes its “Top” and “Best” selections: published criteria, verified evidence only, no numerical scores, no paid influence.

Last updated October 12, 2026

Version 1.0. Published October 12, 2026.

Our “Top” and “Best” lists are editorial selections, not official academic rankings. A program (or, for school-level lists, a school through its supporting degrees) is selected when verified facts from the school's own official pages satisfy every required criterion for that list. Selections are shown alphabetically and are not numbered: we do not have comparable data that would justify ordering one program above another.

Every entry shows the evidence that satisfied each criterion, the strengths and tradeoffs that follow from the verified facts, the kind of applicant the published structure suits, links to the program's sources and the date of review. Missing data never counts in a program's favor; a program whose evidence is not yet verified is simply not selected.

We do not use acceptance rates, reputation surveys, alumni credits, festival selections or awards, placement rates, salary data, student-satisfaction figures or claimed industry connections. We do not claim school visits or interviews. Required internships, placement assistance, advertised opportunities and guaranteed placements are different things and are reported only as the school states them.

Sponsorship and advertising never influence selection. Paid placements are displayed separately and labeled “Sponsored”, and the selection code does not read sponsorship data. A school cannot pay to be added, kept, ordered or marked verified.

If numbered rankings are introduced later, we will publish the criteria, weights, data period, missing-data treatment, the universe considered, each program's score breakdown and a new methodology version before any number appears.

We do not manufacture a list. A list is published only when its minimum number of qualifying entries is met, and a short list is published as a short list.

Criteria

Each list names which criteria are required. Weights are not used: version 1.0 is a pass/fail selection, not a score.

CriterionWhat counts as evidence
Eligible degree or formal pathwayThe award and its field are verified on an official page: a dedicated degree, an officially named concentration, or (where a list allows it) a broader film degree with substantial verified curriculum in the field. One elective never counts.
Published structureDelivery and program length (duration or credits) are verified on official pages.
Culminating workThe thesis film, thesis screenplay, capstone or dissertation requirement is verified.
Published admissions materialsThe portfolio, reel, writing sample or other submission requirements are published item by item.
Published costTuition is published on an official page with its basis and academic year.
Production resources and costsEquipment access, facilities or production costs (fees, thesis budgets, equipment and software requirements) are documented for the program. Recorded when present; required on production-focused lists.
Funding evidenceAn official funding policy, assistantship, scholarship or production grant is verified. Not required for selection; competitive awards are never presented as guaranteed.
Verified online modelThe attendance requirement is verified (fully online, limited visits or low-residency) and at least one element of how online study works is documented (coursework delivery, residencies, local filming, equipment, collaborators).
Source quality and freshnessEligibility evidence and the facts above come from the school's own pages, verified within the last 12 months.

Strengths, tradeoffs and applicant fit

Each entry shows strengths and tradeoffs that follow from verified facts (for example a published thesis-film budget, or the absence of any published equipment policy) and the kind of applicant the published structure may suit (a named cinematography pathway suits aspiring cinematographers; a low-residency format suits people who must keep working). These notes describe structures, not quality, and do not assume that the most famous or expensive school is the right choice for every applicant.

Synonyms

“Top” and “Best” versions of the same list point to one page. For example, “best film schools” resolves to Top Film Schools, and “top online film schools” resolves to Best Online Film Schools.

Data period, universe and missing data

Data period. Facts verified on official pages in October 2026, with the review date shown on each list.

Universe. Published, eligible programs in our directory at review time (see /methodology/ for eligibility). Coverage is partial and growing; a program missing from our directory cannot be selected.

Missing data. Unverified facts count as missing. A required criterion with missing evidence means the program is not selected; optional criteria are recorded when present and their absence is shown as a tradeoff.

Review and corrections

Selections are proposed by applying the criteria to verified facts and reviewed by an editor; the review date is shown on each list and entry. Programs are re-assessed when their facts are re-verified. A school can send official sources through Suggest an update; it cannot request inclusion in exchange for payment. See the sponsorship disclosure.
